Chandrasekhar limit

The Chandrasekhar limit is the maximum mass of the degenerate core of the white dwarf that can be supported by electron generacy. If the mass of a star exceeds this limit, about 1.4 solar masses, then gravity of the star will overcome the electron degeneracy pressure and the core will not stabilize against gravitational collapse.
