Dear Paula,

Oy gevalt have I been busy lately. But here's the Amber rundown for the
past two weeks. It's probably not complete, but I'll try to hit the
high points.

Oberon has moved the entire family to Chaos, to "The Keep," which is
what we're supposed to call House Amber proper -- no sentimental labels
like "The Castle" or anything. Benedict and Gerard are the only ones
with access to Amber. Gerard complains that they are little more than
prisoners there, allowed to come and go only to report to Oberon. The
Amber citizenry have been evacuated to the Golden Circle, and a choice
few servants of the royal family have been brought to Chaos. Their
ranks are supplemented by the occasional demon. Queen Moire
and Dairmaid's mother, Princess Cordelia, and a handful of servants
are the only ones left in Rebma. Prince Consort Hartell and General
Ips have taken the rest of the population to the Verdant Circle to found
New Rebma. Gerard reports that the Queen's mental health is not good.

I think part of the reason Queen Moire has not come to Chaos is to
avoid dealing with her ex-husband. Seems that many many moons ago,
she and this guy founded a house of Chaos. Then Oberon decided that
Moire should come back to Rebma so he implanted memories in her mind.
She thought that Oberon had slaughtered her husband and her family, while
Oberon tidily avoided Chaos retributions by NOT ACTUALLY DOING IT. Now
the whole house despises Moire for abandoning them (or so she thinks,
anyway -- I haven't figured out if they really do hate her.)

Oberon gave Prince Tindall and Prince Gelb to this house as hostages.
Dairmaid and Nerene went to visit them and see if they had been treated
well. They had been. Then we started kvetching about Oberon's *ahem*
ENLIGHTENED attitudes. After the dressing-down he got from Moire, Dairmaid
was resigned to being respectful toward Oberon. He just gritted his teeth and
said nothing when Oberon pooh-poohed his unhappiness at leaving Rebma.
Dairmaid brought Tindall's fiance, Marissa, to Chaos with him, and when she
was put to work like a common servant, he simply flew into a rage but didn't
actually cause any physical harm to anyone. When it was then assumed that
Marissa must be Dairmaid's concubine, and she was given a room next to his
with an adjoining door, he simply locked the door and asked Marissa to leave
the key in her room in a prominent place. All these outrages and many more
he was willing to suffer. But then Oberon stepped on Nerene's pretty webbed
toes. He refused to permit her to study the military arts, telling her that
her duty to the House would be decorative and reproductive. This, in
combination with the way Moire was treated, set Gelb off. He seems to have
taken well to life in Chaos. He has a good idea what's going on and he's not
taking any lip from anyone. He wants to take action against Oberon. When
Dairmaid tried to counsel him that this was a bad idea, particularly since
Nerene is still a member of Oberon's house, Gelb suggested that Nerene, and
possibly Dairmaid, might leave House Amber and join his house.

Did I mention that this was House Jesby? Yes, JESBY! Moire helped found
(or rather, re-found) House JESBY. For crying out loud . . .

Anyway, I think if Dairmaid and Gelb are left to their own devices, they'll
eventually goad each other into doing something incredibly brave and stupid.
None of Oberon's kids have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to the old
man. Probably for good reason. Dairmaid's going to end up a house plant,
too, just like poor Kamow.

News from the rest of the Universe: To my knowledge, there are no plans in
the works to rewrite the Pattern as the Unicorn advised. Oberon doesn't
take advice on how to run HIS universe from a mule, it seems. (And I
neglected to mention that we have a dainty, feminine Unicorn, not the bruiser
of old -- but I think you knew that.) Florimel is increasing her redhead
collection -- she's got Fiona and Brand, now, and, come to think of it, I
haven't seen Bleys in a while. Moral of the story : Don't leave your parent
alone unless they're nailed to the floor and crowbars don't work in that
Shadow. Since Oberon and he had their little falling-out, Eric is being REALLY
REALLY helpful and polite. And he doesn't remember who any of us youngsters
are. Last time I stick MY little green neck out for a King of Amber. Where's
my earlship NOW, Your Majesty?

                                                          Britt
