Dear Britt,
Oberon didn't like women who could fight before Chiara ended up
commander in chief of the armies of Amber for a while. That really
ticked him off, especially when she pointed out that the reason that
Benedict had left it to her was that she was better than any of the men
in the family. If Dworkin is not around to see that Nerene is free to do
what she wants to, then I suspect Nerene has a problem. Considering the
treatment of Marissa, it sounds like the general attitude toward women
has gone down the tubes. If I were an Amberite female at this point, I
think I'd be all for changing houses. And Chiara had an open invitation
to join one particular house any time she chose to do so - hmm, maybe
that should be mentioned to Jason. I don't know what her attitude would
be now, but she was not inclined to put up with too much from Oberon.
Though I assume she couldn't out fight him any more, much less deal with
his use of powers and artifacts. Speaking of artifacts, have you guys
heard of a twin brother of Benedict's? Say, did Oberon forbid Nerene's
learning powers? Maybe she should trump dear Aunt Flora, and offer to
sweep the precints or whatever in exchange for lessons. Somehow, I
suspect that would not make Oberon happy, either, especially if Flora has
anything like the propensity for playing around that she has is the
books. Then there's always getting knocked up without benefit of
marraige. Preferably by a Prince of Chaos, so that Oberon would find it
difficult to do anything about it if she chose to live 'in flagrante
delicto.' Of course, she would have to stay out of his reach after
getting pregnant, so living where the guy put her would probably be
necessary. Surely there's some Prince out there who would be willing to
tweak Oberon's nose like that - the only question is if there are any
that are halfway decent. What about an order of nuns? She could start
one, dedicated to the worship of the serpent, and make one of the
criteria for membership that they never marry.
No, I did not know you had a dainty, feminine unicorn. I wonder
if that was in any way Oberon's doing? It would be something he would
like better than the one we had before. And that idea would make Chiara
majorly paranoid about her esteemed Papa. Are the elders really
kowtowing to Oberon sincerely, or is someone dealing under the table?
Someone who had more sense than Eric. He never was too bright. As for
Dairmaid ending up a houseplant, probably more like demon material.
Sorry.
Paula
