Dear Paula,

Two weeks worth, again!

Oberon is back hanging around. We're all thrilled. He told Atura that
he wished she'd followed orders, didn't say anything to Nerene, and
gave Dairmaid a thorough tongue-lashing. Get this. Oberon says
that he knew that the Keep was bugged, and he just wanted the
other Chaos lords to THINK that women from House Amber weren't
allowed to fight, and insinuated that it was remarkably STUPID of
Dairmaid not to seek out all the facts about the situation before
flaunting Oberon's orders. Insinuated, hell. He said it flat out.
Dairmaid snarled right back, saying that when Nerene tried to find out
he facts she was fed a load of utter bullshit, so he didn't think he'd
fare much better. To be honest, I don't beleive this "bugging" crap
anyway. It's MY theory that Oberon just realized that the women (and
the demons) weren't going to go along with his ridiculous order and tried
to find a face- saving way to rescind it. And it didn't save much face,
because if he DID tell the truth, I think his plan was REALLY STUPID.

Dairmaid told Oberon flat out that if he thought there was a way to safely
leave House Amber without losing all contact with Rebma, he and Nerene
would go. Oberon didn't offer any advice.

Before he started in on Dairmaid, Oberon got him to agree to
give shapeshifting lessons to house members. I don't know if they'll
be required for everyone, voluntary, recommended, or what. Atura is
supposed to give self-defense lessons to the ladies.

Bleys and Llewella, who are hiding out in Shadow, asked Dairmaid if
he was interested in toppling Oberon's little regime. They tap-danced
around a lot, but of course the answer was "Yes." He's supposed to
stay in Chaos and keep an eye on things. He's been in Chaos, but he
hasn't been snooping around.

There was a family dinner to announce Oberon's engagement to Dori (EWW!).
The Rebman Contingent was all there -- Tyndall, Marissa, Sally, Gelb,
Vialle, Nerene and Dairmaid. Kinda like old home week. Dori had been
to Rebma and brought back some doo-dads, including a chatcharjee board,
so we played long into the night.

Caine appears to have faked his death. Oberon hauled him in from
Shadow a few weeks ago, bruised and battered, and he's been moping
in his room -- pardon me, not moping, PLOTTING, he says. Anyway,
he got disgustingly drunk at dinner and passed out, and some servants
carried him back to his room. Dori went in later to make sure he
hadn't drowned in his own vomit or something, and found a decapitated
body.

No blood though -- and according to Oberon Caine's always faking his
death. Ever since Caine (age 12) killed Corwin's favorite horse and
Corwin spent a year finding shadows of Caine, killing them in various
ways, and leaving them around Caine's rooms.

You know, I could make some kind of a comment hear about Oberon's
parental skills and the sanity of the Family in general, but I'm sure
you're thinking exactly what I'm thinking, so let's just move on,
okay?

I've been playing Amber just long enough to suspect that someone
might have exploited Caine's tendency to fake his death and nab him,
leaving a shadow's corpse behind to make it look like Caine wanted
to fake his death -- or kill Caine and make it LOOK like it was just
a shadow left behind by Caine as he faked his own death or . . .
ah, whatever. Anyway, Dairmaid is going to look into it . . . in
the morning.

Dairmaid has also been bugging Eric -- subtly. He keeps mentioning
things that Eric SHOULD know. It might be working. Before, if you
said, "But you've MET so-and-so, you SHOULD know who he is," Eric
just smiled obliviously and said, "No, I think you're mistaken."
But now he seems troubled by the gaps in his knowledge. This is
probably going to get me into even DEEPER trouble with Oberon,
but he shouldn't have done such a sloppy job.

Lazarus has been captured by Mandor. The two got aquainted when
Lazarus had a Spikard. Mardor was much disappointed to find that
Laz didn't have the Spikard any more. (I said, "Gee, don't you feel
dumb having wasted a fancy-schmancy spell when a net with a carrot
under it would have done the trick?") Laz has been wandering around
Mandor's keep, and it seems there's some woman lurking about too who
Mandor doesn't have a good handle on -- she either isn't supposed to
be there, or isn't supposed to be seen by Lazarus, or something. She
said she was a prisoner, too, but then she disappeared, and Laz
mentioned a woman off-hand to Mandor -- said he thought she was a
decorator or something, and Mandor became very agitated. Mandor
says he's working on "negotiating Lazarus's release." Probably
going to ransom him back to Oberon or something -- which suggests a
lucrative cottage industry nabbing Amberites.

Maximillian the Demon Sorceror is clawing his way relentlessly toward the
plot. He's been working with Mandor and looking for both Lazarus and
Morgan.
