Dear Paula,
Hard work and research paid off. After his ill-starred
restruant-picking expedition, Dairmaid talked to Limmick, The Imperial
Herald, about how to choose wines in Chaos. Limmick told him that the
dining establishment he had chosen had a reputation for sticking it to the
neophyte by overcharging them. Well, Morgan and Dairmaid had dinner.
Dairmaid chose the perfect wine (and new the specialties of the house
because he'd done his research with fine dining magazines) and he wasn't
overcharged a whit. Limmick also told Dairmaid that those Jesby and
Hendrake punks were out to cut Dairmaid's purse. Dairmaid had a few
select things to say about a place where a fellow minding his own business
could expect to be jumped by a bunch of holligans, and where people wear
their house colors to commit a crime.
Over dinner, Dairmaid and Morgan discussed outright sedition, without
actually committing to anything. A few scraps of information were
exchanged.
I found out what was bugging Atura. She found out that Dairmaid and
Nerene were an item. Daimaid can take some of the responsibility for
that, I guess, but it's not like it was a secret -- they're awfully
smoochy in public as it is. Now, the big problem is that Atura
also didn't realize that Dierdre and Corwin are an item. Irritated about
Dairmiad and Nerene, Atura had a little bit to drink, and ended up in the
sack with Corwin. And Dierdre found out. So Atura was devestated.
She ended up sobbing on Dairmaid. (For some reason he has this effect on
women. Any woman who gets to know him eventually gives him a soggy
shoulder.) Dairmaid made soothing noises and told her that since she
didn't know about her mother and Corwin, it wasn't HER fault -- CORWIN
should have known better. (Of course, with an Amberite, knowing better
and doing better are two different things.) And he told her that Nerene
wouldn't be jealous of Atura, because that wasn't how things worked in
Rebma. Atura sniffled, and said that's the way it was like where she was
from, too, but that's not how everyone acted in Amber. "Uncivilized
savages," sneered Dairmaid. "That's what they called me," said Atura.
"Shows what they know."
So Atura and Dairmaid are off to find Caine (and incidentally get away
from Dierdre and Corwin for a while.)
It turns out that one of the fairies warned Dori about letting Oberon know
about her association with them, so she's keeping it under wraps -- as
best as Dori can do that, anyway. She begged Oberon to make sure Caine
was all right, so Oberon tried scrying with the Jewel and a vessel of
water. All he got was an image of the sea before he was blocked.
Lazarus is in deep doo-doo. We aren't sure if the character is going to
survive. Deep in Mandor's Hells, all sorts of critters on his tail, he
was "rescued" by the Kendrai. I don't know if I've mentioned them, or if
you already know of them. They're called "The Great Enemy" by Chaos.
("They're not so great," said Benedict.) Well, the Kendrai don't take
prisoners, they make converts. Don't know how it's going to work out,
but Jason spent a long time out in the hall with Dani.
