Dear Paula,
Many revelations this week.
Atura and Dairmaid found that Shadow a ways out from Chaos was very
war-torn, getting worse as you move toward Amber. Contacting Gerard,
they trumped to Kashfa. Gerard reports that he hasn't encountered a lot
of warfare in Shadow, but that the economy of the Golden Circle has
basically collapsed now that Amber is closed off. He's trying to smooth
things out in Kashfa, and cautioned that Amberites have been declared
outlaws in most of the Golden Circle. Indeed, there "Wanted"
posters for all the Elders and a few Youngers, like Dori, who'd done a lot
of work setting up refugee camps and relief hospitals in the Golden
Circle. That's gratitude for you, huh?
Tracing Caine to Eregnor (that bit of Shadow between Begma and Kashfa
which was mentioned in the books) Atura and Dairmaid found he was
in the manor of the regional lord. They concocted a story about a Atura
(alias "Bella") killing, Jed, brother of Dairmaid (alias "Zeb"). They
were brought before the lord who turns out to be . . . drumroll . . .
Rain.
After Rain worked out a compromise between "Bella" and "Zeb", they were
dismissed and sneaked down toward the basement, dispatching a few guards
along the way. This, of course, alerted everyone to their presence. About
the time Dairmaid finally had Caine out of his chains, Rain was blocking
the only exit from the dungeon.
In a fit of downright manipulative brilliance, Dairmaid actually talked
Caine into APOLOGIZING to Rain for attacking him, which he had done
because he had taken offense to being declared an outlaw. He hadn't
understood the ramifications of isolating Amber from the Golden Circle,
and now understands the resentment of the Golden Circle residents toward
Amber. I think we've also got Rain almost talked into letting Caine go,
owing Rain a huge personal favor, of course.
Dori is preggers with Oberon's unholy spawn. She's delighted --
furnishing a nursery at great expense is right up her alley.
Brand (in Flora's happy-happy-joy-joy shadow) hauled Lazarus out of the
Kendrai's clutches (somewhat against Laz's will) and then sent him on his
way. (Some Amberites have all the luck.)
Amberites who _don't_ have all the luck include Morgan, whose father, it
turns out, is Mandor, the very fellow who contrived to produce
Fiona's-head-in-a box and grafted a demon-duplicate onto her real body.
Morgan is trying, with limited sucess, to understand the history of the
redheads (Brand, Fiona, and Clarissa) in Chaos.
Maximillian the Demon has been ordered to get access to house Barimen,
which he's planning to obtain through Morgan.
