Dear Paula,
Caine was released to Gerard and Benedict (in return for certain
concessions to Eregnor, I get the impression.) Atura and Dairmaid are now
with them in Amber. Caine is exhibiting a remarkable new maturity. I
think maybe for the first time in his life he realizes that he can't get
along alone, and if he wants to stay on good terms he can't be a jerk all
the time. Benedict and Gerard haven't decided whether or not to turn him
over to Oberon yet. Dairmaid is hoping to see Moire while he's in Amber.
Benedict and Gerard each have some kind of object that lets them enter
and leave Amber, but no one else can get in or out. Rebma is in the same
shadow as Amber, too. Gerard and Dairmaid went over what's going on. It
turns out Gerard is keeping tabs on everyone. He knows that Flora has
Brand and Fi, and that Bleys and Llewella are at large and plotting
against Oberon -- and that Dairmaid agreed to help them. They discussed
how Oberon keeps the Family at bay. By annulling his marriage to
Benedict's mother (was she really Titania or is my tree wrong?) he made
Benedict illegitamate, and since he doesn't have a rightful claim,
Benedict will not take the throne. He says that Oberon keeps Corwin,
Eric, and Deirdre out of the way by supporting Corwin, who's not as strong
as Eric, so that those three can quibble amongst themselves. And the
Redheads get themselves into too much trouble to be a real threat to
Oberon's power. Fi and Brand are unstable, Gerard says, and Bleys' only
real fault is that he's a psychopath. Meanwhile, Oberon mind-raped Eric
in a sloppy and obvious fashion in order to remind everyone what he's
capable of, reinforce their bullied and miserable childhoods, and get Eric
momentarily out of the way.
I like Gerard. Next to Caine he may be my favorite NPC. Everybody thinks
he's really stupid. Daimaid thinks he just seems slow because he actually
thinks before he shoots his mouth off. He keeps his eyes and ears
open and his big yap shut. Nobody hates him. He knows what's going
on. He's not really King material, but he's a good egg.
Atura has been flirting with Dairmaid, who's holding off on indulging his
desires until she gets a chance to work things out with Corwin and
Deirdre. It's kind of a nice romantic relationship. One of those cool
ones where you don't jump into bed right away. Where holding hands is a
huge thrill, and you spend long, sleepless nights *anticipating.*
Lesse, what else. Morgan has found his houseplant/demon-bodygaurd, Kamow,
and is working on coaxing him into recovery.
Lazarus has found his calling in helping to plan the new city around the
Keep.
Despite Amy's best efforts, Dori has not yet convinced Oberon to track
down Dairmaid and Atura. She's been hanging around preventing Lazarus
from getting any work done instead.
