2005 Radio/Submm Astronomy Planning Committee (5RSAPG) Minutes of telecon 04Nov15 Present: Geoff Blake, Don Campbell, John Carlstrom, Neal Evans, Martha Haynes, Jackie Hewitt, Ken Kellermann, Jim Moran, Steve Myers, Mark Reid and Jack Welch 1. A website has been setup for our organizational purposes and for information exchange between us, the projects/facilities and the community at large. The URL is: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/~haynes/rmspg 2. MH has had a discussion with Wayne van Citters at NSF about the activity of this group and about NSF plans for the senior review. WvC explained that the background to the review is two-fold. First, it was recommended by the 2000 Astronomy and Astrophysics Survey Committee that NSF conduct a review of its facilities. Second, the NSF AST budget has gone up by $60M since 2000, and it is appropriate for the Division to take a look at how those new funds have and should be allocated in terms of the AST long range vision. MH asked about the format for input of material to the senior review. AST is holding a division retreat this week to discuss the process, charge to committee etc. WvC promised to provide further details soon. 3. Contacts have now been made with the directors/contacts for al of the facility/project directors, with a request for information from each. The information request has been posted as both the "Dear Colleague" letter: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/~haynes/rmspg/docs/colleagues041108.txt and a list of specific items: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/~haynes/rmspg/docs/request041108.txt 4. In order to expedite communications, a member of the planning group has been assigned as the "group coordinator" for each of the identified projects/facilities. A complete list of projects/facilities, contacts and coordinators is posted at: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/~haynes/rmspg/projs.htm 5. There is some concern that we may have missed some project/facility. Efforts will be made to make sure that the community is aware of our activities. [Added later: MH has contacted the AAS about a posting in the next AAS email newsletter and also in the next NRAO newsletter.] 6. There was considerable discussion about the best approaches to be taken to the report in terms of its organization and content. It was agreed that science has the highest priority in the radio and submillimeter strategy. A preliminary list of science questions will be circulated by the next meeting for discussion at that time. 7. The next telecon is scheduled for Mon. Nov 29th at 12EST
