2005 Radio/Submm Astronomy Planning Group (5RSAPG) Minutes of telecon 10Jan05 Present: Geoff Blake, John Carlstrom, Neil Evans, Martha Haynes, Jackie Hewitt, Ken Kellermann, Al Marscher, Steve Myers, and Mark Reid 1. It was agreed that the discussion with Wayne van Citters at the last telecon was useful and that he would be invited to join again sometime in February. 2. Most of the summaries are now in and most have been reorganized as needed to match our template. Still missing are: ARO Ziurys Reid SP10M Carlstrom Reid SMA Moran Campbell Other CMB Myers,Carlstrom Kellermann Planck Carlstrom Kellermann SIRA MacDowell Carlstrom This process appears to have worked extremely well; we have a very useful set of documents describing the radio and submillimeter facilities. There was a discussion of the process for homogenizing and finalizing the web summaries. MH will finish the first drafts and will then notify the designated 5RSAPG contact. The 5RSAPG contact will do a careful review of the material and also ask the facility contact to do likewise. MH may also be query facility contacts about missing information, questions, etc. Updates/changes can be made, but folks wanting changes should contact MH to coordinate how that is done. It was agreed that the bulk of the responsibility for content should lie with the facility contacts, not this panel. It was agreed to include the NASA facilities that operate in the radio/submm range but with the disclaimer that we are not reviewing them. 3. NE agreed to coordinate the presentation of the subcommittee on science. Others on this subcommittee are: DC, JC, SM, MR + ? It was agreed that the current purpose of the NSF AST senior review suggest greater specificity on the relationship of the facilities to the science program than was the focus of the 2000 ASAC report. 4. KK agreed to coordinate the presentation of the subcommittee on technology. Others on this subcommittee are: GB, JC, JH, JW + ? It was agreed that this subcommittee would contribute bullets on (a) how technological advances have led directly to truly great discoveries and (b) how the technological objectives of the next 1-5 years will push the frontiers of science in the next 5-10 years. 5. MR agreed to coordinate the presentation of a facilities matrix. Others on this subcommittee are: NE, KK, + ? 6. AM agreed to coordinate the presentation of the subcommittee on synergies, looking at nat'l/internat'l, ground and space, all wavelengths. Others on this subcommittee are: DC, JM, MR + ? JM will be asked to compile a summary of the major international radio/submm facilities. DC will be asked to provide input on synergies with physics/atmosphere/solar programs. 7. DC will be asked to coordinate the presentation of the subcommittee on historical facilities. Others on this subcommittee are: KK, JM + ? 8. It was agreed that all subcommittees would be called upon to make reports at the next telecon. It was agreed that we would try to have a first draft report by 1 Mar. 9. MH has been asked to give a presentation at the Feb 15/16th meeting of the (N)AAAC (http://www.aas.org/naaac/), chaired by Garth Illingworth; JC is a current member. This committee is charged to "assess and make recommendations regarding, the coordination of astronomy and astrophysics programs of the [NSF] and [NASA]". JC reported that DOE has signed on also. Although radio astronomy is almost exclusively an NSF enterprise, it was agreed that it is useful to all for the AAAC to be aware of our activities on behalf of the US radio/submm community. There is NASA overlap at shorter wavelengths. 10. The next telecon will be held as 12n EST on Mon Jan 24th.
