MH gave a progress report on RMSPG activities to the AAAC on 2/15. A copy is posted at: http://www.astro.cornell.edu/rmspg/docs/rmspg_aaac.pdf JC who is a member of the AAAC reported on reactions and comments from other AAAC members to the RMSPG presentation and also to the general state being imposed by budget constraints. Among the highlights: - Meg Urry presented the letter report on the "Review of Progress Towards the Decadal Vision in Astronomy and Astrophysics". See: http://books.nap.edu/catalog/11230.html - Ray Weiss presented a summary of activities on the Task Force on CMB Research. This report is due soon, but is not yet ready. 2. Jim Ulvestad and Jim Cordes have organized a discussion among the principal stakeholders at radio wavelengths to develop a coherent strategy. A draft report by this group will be circulated to the RMSPG for comment at our meeting on Friday. 3. Subcommittee status reports were given by their respective chairs. Progress is ongoing. a. Science (Neal) b. Technology (Ken) c. Facilities matrix (Mark) d. Synergies (Alan) e. Historical facilities (Don) There was considerable discussion of how best to illustrate the complementary attributes of wavelength coverage, resolution, sensitivity, and mapping speed. Mark and Neil in particular are working to try to summarize. 4. Plans for face-to-face meeting this Friday were discussed. a. Logistics were discussed. AUI has agreed to pay expenses; we are still awaiting word from NSF as to whether costs will be reimbursed to AUI. b. Principal issues for discussion (random order) - Community versus facilities - ALMA operating funds - URO support - EVLA-II/SKA/ATA - Low frequency arrays - NSF long range strategy process - "Open skies" versus "restricted skies" - Others 5. Strategy for completion of report a. We will follow the outline generated previously, and making use of the various subcommittee reports. The web compilation will be used to provide detailed information on current and proposed facilities/projects. b. We hope to have a full draft before the end of March. In particular, we wish to convey a draft to NSF for comment on that timescale. c. It was agreed that we need to provide a mechanism for community comment at the same time. 6.
