Selection of zodi patches

last update November 10 2001

In the following we present data supporting the selection of faint and bright zodi patches to be used for IRS flatfields during the first year of the mission.

Faint Zodi

The selection of low zodi regions was based on the following restrictions: If the above conditions are met then the actual backgroun is accurately (errors ~20%) determined by the zodi model of B. Reach as included in SPOT. (see description in [HTML] or PDF , also check a brief discussion).

Taking into account the above we propose to use the following regions for low zodi measurements:

The flux densities of the background for the above positions are:

Table 1: Low Zodi Selected regions

Location Wavelength (microns) / Flux density (MJy/sr)
510152025304060100

Groth_NE (Jan 15): 0.49 10.7 18.5 19.5 17.6 15.3 11.0 6.02.7
HDF-North (Jan 15): 0.42 9.9 17.6 18.9 17.3 15.0 10.9 6.02.4
CVZ-North (min): 0.39 9.7 17.5 18.8 17.2 14.8 10.5 5.7 2.2
CVZ-North (max): 0.59 11.7 19.5 20.1 18.0 15.4 11.1 6.12.4
CVZ-South (min): 0.31 6.8 11.7 12.1 10.9 9.4 6.7 3.7 1.4
CVZ-South (max): 0.41 8.6 14.3 14.8 13.3 11.4 8.2 4.41.7

NOTE:The knowledge of the background at ~5microns (short low) is rather problematic. There is an offset of a factor of few between the model and the DIRBE maps. However, since we take a large number of PU images during IOC this will be the easiest module for which we can construct deep "super-flats" by combining various datasets.

Bright Zodi (updated Aug. 28th 2001)

The areas of bright were selected based on the following criteria:

Using the regions specified in the above table I measured the infrared emission at 4.9, 12 and 25 microns (DIRBE maps e90ecl04.fits, e90ecl05.fits, and e90ecl06.fits respectively). In the four areas where no appropriate ecliptic latitude had been selected I used the value +1 degree, even though this needs to be revised. The measured flux densities as well as links to the 2MASS images are provided in the following table. We also provide the number of stars with K band magnitude brighter than 9 (for a K-giant m_K=8mag => IRAS12 = 30mJy, IRAS25=7mJy) found within a degree from the given position.

The information presented on table 2 were calculated using the IDL program zflux.pro, which takes as input the last two columns of Table 2 (also provided at: sun80.txt)
